Is Being a Professional Cleaning Technician as Simple as it Seems?

When I started my cleaning business, I did so because of my true love of cleaning, to make my rent payment and because it was extremely therapeutic to clean for me! There is something very satisfying about taking a dirty unorganized area and transforming it into a sparkling clean space. Have you noticed that people seem to thrive when their environment is organized and clean? I still love to clean; it is soul soothing for me and to most of us crazies who absolutely love to clean!

Starting a house cleaning business is a relatively easy and affordable endeavor compared to various other service-based businesses. However, the notion that starting a cleaning business is effortless and easy is very much a myth, especially when you are the proprietor, and envision growing your one-person cleaning operation into a thriving cleaning empire. There are so many things to think about.

Myth: There are no skills required for cleaning.

It's a common misconception that cleaning homes professionally does not require any special skills or knowledge. This simply is not true, being a professional cleaner means being an expert in various cleaning techniques, many different surfaces, understanding cleaning products, and a knowledge of safety protocols. There are so many surfaces that can be damaged with the wrong products! Green scrubby sponges can scratch just about everything (use the blue non scratch sponges instead), acids can ruin surfaces if not used properly (neutral cleaners are safest), pumice stones may etch, magic erasers can take finishes off. There are many things to know about cleaning, so the home is not damaged!

Time is Money

When you clean your own home, it might take all day, but this won't fly in the professional realm. As professional cleaners, we must deliver a level of service that our clients want to pay for - maybe even on a weekly basis. Striking a balance between effectiveness and efficiency requires a substantial understanding of cleaning techniques and products. Also, having structured processes and policies in place – from pricing jobs to marketing the business – takes a lot of time and a lot of thought.

Why do we hone these skills?

• We want happy clients! Clients have certain expectations when they hire a cleaning service. By clearly outlining our services and training our cleaning techs to meet (and exceed!) these expectations, our customers become loyal and long-term customers.

• We need to stay competitive. People choose a cleaning service they perceive as trained and skilled, that can consistently deliver excellent results. They want assurance that the cleaning service they hire has a well-defined process for completing the work within the agreed-upon time frame and have knowledge of the tools and products that will be used in their homes.

• We want the business to grow. Because we have a reputation for expertise and quality, our loyal clients will happily spread the word with referrals and five-star reviews. This allows us to grow as a business and further improve our skills.

As Kidwell's Kleaning has grown over the past 33+ years, we continue to invest in training and continuous improvement to ensure we remain at the forefront of the cleaning profession. We are proud to offer exceptional service that keeps our clients coming back for more.
